Thistlepark Credit, a small-business funding broker in Youngstown, Ohio, works with Mahoning County businesses in the sectors its lending partners have confirmed: construction, restaurants, medical and dental offices, plus retail and wholesale trade. Each sector is matched to the funding structures that fit its cash cycle. Agriculture and trucking are not covered, and partners make all credit decisions.
How Mahoning County, OH employers break down
Mahoning County had 5,391 employer establishments in 2023. Retail trade led with 807, followed by health care and social assistance with 749, other services with 607, accommodation and food services with 571, professional services with 434 and construction with 427. Health care had the largest payroll by far, about $1.10 billion of the county's $4.06 billion total (U.S. Census Bureau, County Business Patterns 2023).
Inside those broad groups, the parts our partners fund are narrower: food services and drinking places had 539 establishments, ambulatory health care services, which include physician and dental offices, had 502, and wholesale trade had 251.
Retailers and wholesalers
Retail trade had 807 employer establishments in Mahoning County in 2023, 40.3 percent of them with fewer than five employees, and wholesale trade had 251 (U.S. Census Bureau, County Business Patterns 2023). Another 1,466 retail businesses had no paid employees in 2024 (U.S. Census Bureau, Nonemployer Statistics 2024). For these businesses the main question is paying for stock before customers pay for it, which is the subject of inventory financing.
Businesses outside these sectors
Partners fund other kinds of businesses too, but agriculture and trucking are not among the sectors they have confirmed, and we do not arrange funding for them. Manufacturing is a sizable employer in the county, with 298 establishments and 9,794 paid employees in 2023, but it is not a confirmed partner sector either; call before assuming a structure will be available. The county's employer profile shows the full sector list.
