Term loans, from closing to final payment
At closing, the whole sum is paid out in one go. From then on, the business makes regular payments, usually monthly, until the balance reaches zero at the end of the term. Each payment covers that period's interest plus part of the principal. Early in the term most of the payment is interest; toward the end most of it is principal. That gradual shift is what amortization means.
The term itself is usually tied to what the money buys. A renovation that will serve the business for a decade can justify a longer loan than a software rollout that will be replaced in three years.
Uses that fit a term loan
- Build-outs and renovations of a leased or owned space, including the permit-driven work covered in our Youngstown, OH zoning and building permit checklist.
- A second location, where the first site's track record supports the request. The post on funding a second location in the Mahoning Valley covers what partners ask.
- Buying another business's assets, such as a retiring owner's equipment and client list.
- Refinancing several costlier obligations into one scheduled payment.
- Larger equipment packages, although single machines often fit equipment financing better.
For costs that come and go, a line of credit is usually the closer match.
Small business loans in Ohio for start-ups
A business with little or no operating history can still ask for a term loan, but the review shifts toward the owner: personal credit, experience in the trade, a written plan with projections, and often a personal investment in the project. Many partners prefer to see some months of operating history before they lend unsecured. In Mahoning County, 46.8 percent of employer establishments had fewer than five employees in 2023 (U.S. Census Bureau, County Business Patterns 2023), so a small headcount alone does not set a business apart; the numbers in the plan do.
What a loan covenant is
A covenant is a promise written into the loan agreement. Some require the business to do things, such as send annual financial statements or keep insurance on the collateral. Others restrict things, such as taking on more debt, selling key assets or paying large distributions to owners. Breaking a covenant can count as a default even when every payment has been made on time, so read the covenant section as closely as the payment schedule.
Clearing a business loan before its last scheduled payment
Often you can, but the cost of doing so varies. Some loans let you pay early and save the interest that would have accrued. Others charge a prepayment fee, or calculate interest so that most of it is owed whatever the payoff date. Ask the partner, in writing, what the payoff amount would be at a few points during the term before you sign.
Working out the payment
The business loan calculator takes an amount, an annual rate and a term in months and returns what each month costs, the interest over the whole term, and the sum paid back. Run it twice with two terms to see the trade-off: stretching the term trims each payment but adds to the interest paid overall. Fees are not included, so add them to the total yourself.
What partners usually review
- Two or more years of business tax returns where they exist, and recent bank statements
- A profit and loss statement for the year so far, plus a balance sheet
- A budget or quotes for the project
- A schedule of existing debts
- Formation documents and evidence the entity is in good standing
