This directory from Thistlepark Credit, a small-business funding broker in Youngstown, Ohio, groups free and low-cost help for Mahoning Valley owners: Small Business Development Center advising, business incubators, economic development organizations, the chamber, and city, county, state and federal offices. Thistlepark Credit is not affiliated with any of them and does not offer grants.
How this list was built
Organizations appear here only once their official pages have been checked by a person. As of this page's publication, the City of Youngstown's official website is confirmed; the other entries below are being verified and are described by type until then. Thistlepark Credit is not affiliated with, endorsed by or paid by any organization listed.
One-on-one advising
Small Business Development Centers belong to a public network funded in part by the U.S. Small Business Administration, and they offer one-on-one advising on plans, cash flow and financing preparation. Ask the centre about any costs before you book.
Incubators and early-stage programs
A business incubator offers early-stage companies a mix of space, mentoring and programs. If you are pre-revenue or in your first year, an incubator's network can also help you find the advisers and introductions a lender will expect you to have.
Economic development
Regional and county economic development organizations work on business attraction, expansion and site selection, and some administer programs for growing companies. They are a useful first call when an expansion involves property, a large hire or a move into the area.
The chamber of commerce
A regional chamber connects members with each other and with local events and programs. Joining is voluntary, and there is normally a membership fee.
City and county offices
The City of Youngstown's official website is youngstownohio.gov (resolved on 2026-10-16). Zoning, permits and any city registration for a Youngstown, OH address start there; our zoning and building permit checklist lists the questions to ask.
State and federal offices
Entity filings, tax registration and SBA programs sit with state and federal offices. Our Ohio business loan checklist explains where each fits in a funding request.
Grants
Grants are outside what Thistlepark Credit offers or arranges. If a grant might suit your project, ask an adviser or an economic development organization about current programs; they are better placed to know.
Who uses this kind of help
Mahoning County had 17,919 businesses with no paid employees in 2024 (U.S. Census Bureau, Nonemployer Statistics 2024), and 46.8 percent of its 5,391 employer establishments had fewer than five employees in 2023 (U.S. Census Bureau, County Business Patterns 2023). For a business that small, the owner is usually also the bookkeeper and the planner, which is exactly when an outside review of the numbers helps most.
What to bring to an adviser
- Your business plan, even a short one, with the purpose of the funding stated plainly
- Twelve months of bank statements, or projections for a new business
- Last year's tax return and a current profit and loss statement
- A list of current debts, leases and advances
- Quotes for anything the funding would buy
Questions to ask any program
- Is there a cost, and what does it cover?
- Who is eligible: location, industry, size, stage?
- Is the help advice only, or does the program also lend or invest?
- How long does a first appointment take to arrange?
Using free help before a funding request
- Take your plan and a twelve-month cash-flow forecast to an adviser.
- Ask the adviser which structure suits the purpose, and why.
- Fix the gaps the adviser finds: missing statements, mixed personal and business accounts, out-of-date records.
- Then compare structures and offers.
Using a free adviser and using a broker can go together. The six-structure comparison and business term loans are good next reads; county figures are on our Youngstown, OH page, and other guides are on the resources hub.
